The Special Education Department continues to make critical advancements in creating "Flexible Learning Environments". This is especially exciting because it began as a Special Education initiative designed to support our students with disabilities, but is making a difference for all of our learners; fundamentally ensuring that ALL students feel like they belong in our schools and in our classrooms.
We are hosting a very special "Special Needs Family Dinner" on December 21st at Kenootz Pizza and will be showing Finding Dory at our “Special Needs Family Movie Night” on January 20th in the Kerkstra gym. We are also beginning an awareness campaign so be on the lookout for our flyer. We are working with 3E Love to design District 142 Spirit Wear featuring 3E Love’s Wheelchair Heart. The Wheelchair Heart is a symbol of acceptance, love, and strength. It embraces differences, it educates the unaware, and it empowers and unifies people of all abilities. The symbol represents real people and real life instead of perceptions and stereotypes. 3E Love is about loving and living life to the fullest no matter what you can or cannot do. Have a wonderful winter break and enjoy the time that it allows for us to reconnect with our family and friends! I've found that a smooth start to the year is indicative of the tone throughout. I truly appreciate the work of our building special education teams to ensure that all of the appropriate supports were in place for our students on Day 1! Our wonderful PTA also hosted our first Special Needs Family Movie Night on 9/11. This is a special all inclusive evening that ensures a comfortable environment for our students with disabilities and their families - most of whom never attended Family Movie Nights before!
Please feel free to contact me any time if I can be of assistance to you! I am committed to ensuring that school is a great place to be...for all of our learners. We will be hosting a Special Needs Family Movie Night on February 27, 2015 at Kerkstra. Doors open at 6:00 PM and the movie starts at 6:30 PM. Bring your entire family and enjoy our special showing of "Frozen". Special thanks to Melissa Crim and the Forest Ridge PTA for running concessions and to Roxana Agler for working with McKenzie Funeral Home and CNB Bank, who both made generous donations to help make the night a success. There is no charge to get in.
Our next Coffee with the Director will be February 2, 2015 at Ridge Early Childhood Center. We will meet at 9:30 in the Volunteer Room. We will be exploring the new D142 Special Education Weebly. I hope to see you there!
Our first "Coffee with the Director" was held on November 6th at Kerkstra. We had a great turn out and were able to discuss some general topics as well as concerns specific to those who participated. Join us for our next event on December 1st at Lee R. Foster Elementary School at 9:30 in the Teachers' Lounge.
